About Sir James Killen

Sir Denis James Killen AC KCMG (1925-2007) was one of the most colourful characters to grace Federal Parliament.

At age 13 Sir James became a jackaroo in outback Queensland. He put himself through extra studies in order to enter the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II and, later, to become a barrister. In his 20s he established the Queensland Young Liberal Movement, becoming its founding president.

For 28 years from 1955-1983, Sir James served in Federal Parliament as the Member for Moreton, including as Minister for the Navy in the Gorton Government and as Defence Minister under Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser.

Sir James was an outspoken member who was no stranger to controversy and fought relentlessly for the causes he believed in. His skill as an orator was acknowledged as one of the best in the Parliament and Sir James' ability to court friendships across the aisle showed the respect he was afforded by many.

In 1982, the Young Liberal Executive established the Sir James Killen Foundation Trust. It is these values the Sir James Killen Foundation looks to instill in Queensland's next generation of leaders through the Young LNP. The Foundation supports the activities of the Young LNP, through its Executive, and places great importance on the personal, professional and political development of its members.

Additionally, the Young LNP holds a hotly contested annual public speaking competition in honour of Sir James, with a Grand Final held every Young LNP Convention.
